Bibliographic properties

The basic data structure

Almeda divides the bibliographic properties for the description of literary works in two sets hereby following the model WikiProject Books had set up. This model is inspired by a conceptual framework widely used in library science: WEMI. WEMI underlines the fact that you can view a book in 4 different ways, or levels:

  • as a work (the novel, the song, the essay; f.e. Caitaani mũtharaba-Inĩ (= Devil on the Cross)
  • as an expression (a specific intellectual or artistic form of the work; f.e. the text in Gikuyu, English, or Swahili)
  • as a manifestation (something published or produced; f.e. the 1982 Swahili edition of Devil on the Cross published by Heinemann Educational Books, Nairobi)
  • or an item (a specific copy you hold in your hand or access on your computer)

WikiProject Books does not use "expression" or "manifestation", as the boundary between the definitions is not easy to grasp. It merged the two layers in one: "edition" Thus for creating book properties in Wikidata a two-layer framework is used consisting of work and edition.

Whereas Almeda follows the two-layer model to be compatible with Wikidata, to allow for easy Federated Searches and future data entry by non-library professionals, the set of properties used is not entirely identical.

Please indicate the holdings if easily possible.

Performances

Questions: How to model performances? How manny layers should be used (work-production-performance versus work-performance)? Should performances of a single person, f.e. spoken-word performance be modelled differently form a group's perfomance such as a theatre play? Which porperties to use to link the performance to its work and eventually to the production of the work?
